A notebook originally referred to a small booklet used for recording various matters. Before the invention of writing, humans often employed knotting on ropes to record numbers or events and convey specific meanings, thereby communicating information. Archaeological evidence, such as net-patterned designs in prehistoric paintings, rope-patterned motifs on pottery, and clay fishing weights, demonstrates that knotting for record-keeping (and counting) was one of the widely used methods among early human societies.
